September 20, 2006 Ann Hathaway from the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service's Family Nutrition Program in Covington presented the program. The emphasis was on the upcoming "Family Day" on September 25. This day has been declared "A day to eat dinner with your children." Sound strange? Not really. Busy schedules have reduced the number of times that families actually eat together. Several local restaurants offered discounts for families eating together that day. The information below is taken from the fact sheet distributed during the program. More of the program details and statistics are available

W Family Day – A Day to Eat Dinner With Your Childrentm is a national effort to promote parental engagement as a simple, effective way to reduce substance abuse by children and teens and raise healthier children. Family Day emphasizes the importance of regular family activities in parent-child communications and encourages Americans to make family dinners a regular feature of their lives. Since 1996 research by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA*) at Columbia University has consistently found that the more often children eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use illegal drugs. In 2001, CASA launched Family Day as an annual event, which takes place on the fourth Monday of each September – the 25th in 2006. For more details about local Family Day and also about local
