Kelly Laffoon, Jill Wright, and Linda Stillabower, three elementary school teachers from the Warren County School Corporation, shown with Rotary President Robert Geyer, took center stage following breakfast at Wednesday's Attica-Williamsport Rotary Meeting to speak about a school activity that garnered them Educator Assistance Awards.

Kelly Laffoon, a teacher at Williamsport Elementary, spoke of her student's efforts at improving recycling efforts. She is using her grant to purchase garbage bags and carts for the collection of recyclable items which are then sold with the proceeds being returned to the school in the form of books for their library.

Linda Stillabower, a veteran Pine Village kindergarten teacher, focuses her efforts in providing a classification of reading materials for the lower elementary which has designs on expanding the project into the upper elementary. It is a program that augments the availability of reading tools, which at this times, especially addresses the needs of the beginning reader.

Jill Wright, Warren Central's winner, has turned her attention to a sometimes forgotten US President from Indiana, Benjamin Harrison. The students in her classroom are making extra special efforts at becoming familiar more familiar with Harrison. Did you know that he was a cousin to all these presidents? George Washington, Thomas Jefferson , James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Calvin Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George Bush, and George W. Bush?  Her project will culminate in a trip to the Harrison home in Indianapolis.

The initial award was given three years ago at Attica Elementary.  Harvey and Marguerite Norman donated money many years ago to the club and as a way to recognize their generosity the board decided in 2003 to fund the awards as a fitting tribute to their service to the community.  The awards have now been extended to Warren County teachers.

Harvey Norman was Attica Elementary School principal from 1940 to 1971, his wife, Marguerite Starkey Smith Norman, was a local business woman and was the first special education teacher in Fountain County.  Widely acclaimed as a teacher, she retired as a teacher from the Attica Grade School.
