The guest speaker was Joel Baumgardner, the
golf pro at Harrison Hills Country Club. He shared with members the
difficulty in becoming a PGA Golf Professional. It took Joel 6 years to
complete the requirements. He told us that his job includes much more than
just the golf course. He also is responsible for the tennis courts and the
pool. In addition, Joel teaches golf at Purdue University and coaches the
Girls' Golf Team at Attica High School. He also has goals for the Harrison
Hills course that include increasing membership, recommending improvements
for the club, and improving revenues through additional greens fees and
merchandise sales. He is also responsible for providing numerous activities
to appeal to the Country Club members as well as to the community.
After Joel completed his talk, Rotarians
held a "putting" contest on the practice green. Joel had it arranged so
that participants would have an opportunity to putt into each of 5 cups.
The member doing it in the least amount of strokes would win.
Twelve people participated and the results will be known at the September 4 Rotary meeting. Prizes will be awarded then. Some Rotarians are quite good considering that play was occurring in the early morning light. August 29 - the guest speaker will be Dale White from the Covington Community Foundation.
