The article below is from the August 2006 District 6560 NewsletterVolume XX, Number 2 • Rotary Year 2006-2007 (To read the entire newsletter please click on the link below the article) The Dictionary Project Would you like to help children read and write better - even improve test scores? Would you like to increase public awareness of Rotary? Would you like to practice Service Above Self? Would you like to extend your literacy program? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then hurry on board the Dictionary Project. This train has already left the station and is picking up steam! The Dictionary Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission
is to assist all students to complete the school year as good writers, active
readers, and creative thinkers by Would you like to help children read and write
better – even improve providing students with their own personal dictionaries.
The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for
years to come. Reading is the most important skill of all. It is the starting
point for all economic and social opportunities. To date 3,820,517 children have
each received a dictionary thanks to the generosity of sponsors who have
participated in the Dictionary Project. There are countless children in need of
this basic tool for learning. Rotary Clubs can purchase the dictionaries for
$1.45 each and paste a kid’s version of the Four Way Test inside the cover.
They are then distributed by Rotarians who go into the 3rd grade classrooms to
make the presentations. Wouldn’t it be great if every 3rd grader in Indiana
received such a gift? As a retired elementary teacher, I can underscore the
value of such a tool for learning. Even in this electronic age there is nothing
like owning one’s own personal book. To schedule a presentation to your club
about this most worthwhile project, please contact me by e-mail or
telephone. |
