Judy Hollander presented the program and explained two projects for local member participation.

Bill Boyd is the President of Rotary International for 2006-07.  Each incoming president emphasizes a group of Rotary projects for the year.  He, as has past Presidents,  included literacy in his group. >>>More.   Judy is the Literacy Chairman for District 6560 and wanted the club to be aware of two ways they could help locally.   She said she was wearing two hats.  One was as a local club member and the other was as a district level person.

Wearing hat #1 she told of the reading program at Attica Elementary School where you can go to the school during Story Time (11:20-11:45) and read to the students.  You can use a book at the school or take your own.  Judy was going to read "McDuff Moves In", a book about a West Highland White Terrier who reminds her of her own wonderful and extremely intelligent "Gabby".

Two other opportunities for reading would be the Homework Club from 3:00 to 4:00 Monday through Thursday where you could help students with homework and also individual reading from 2:05 to 2:35.  Sara Pike coordinates these activities so call her at the school to arrange a time and date.  They welcome community involvement.

Wearing hat #2 as the District Literacy Chairman, Judy explained "The Dictionary Project".  The goal is to provide every third grade student with a dictionary.   For some this could be the only book they own.   Locally, "A Students Dictionary" was chosen as the one the teachers thought best.  The cost is $1.45.   The books would be presented by Rotary members and each would have a plate inside listing the club as donor.  It will help students and teachers and also build club awareness.
