Wie geht es Ihnen? ??, ¿Hola, como estás? Bonjour, comment allez-vous ?

All are greetings and ask "how you are?". Foreign languages seem difficult to most of us, but easier to learn that one would suspect. That was Professor Alan Garfinkel's message to the Attica-Williamsport Rotary Club last Wednesday morning. Dennis Kovar gets an added lesson in the picture above.

Professor Garfinkel, retired Purdue Foreign Language Coordinator ( read...>>More) and member of the Lafayette Rotary Daybreak Club, not only encouraged to learning of languages but presented ideas of mental and physical tools to help in the process. Learning one language makes learning others easier to learn. Stamp collecting, was one of his tools, but basically is the belief in ones ability to learn or interest in the subject that can generate the most success. "We all have the natural tendency to demean ourselves, but we remember more than we give ourselves credit for remembering," he said. "One is never too old to learn."

Other characteristics of the individual that help in learning another language are personality of the individual, those unafraid to take risks, creativity, and musical ability all are important. It is essential that one believe a task can be accomplished.

Judy Hollander and Suzann Shackleton pictured above with
Professor Garfinkel definitely have those characteristics and would
be good candidates for learning another language.  Judy and Dave
could add more German songs for us to sing and Suzann could be
sending those emails in Spanish.  Would be learning experience for
all of us.

Wiedersehen, Au revoir, Adiós. До свидания, Goodbye

The "Quad-City" meeting held at Purdue on April 20 was a great evening.  Rotary Clubs from Boswell, Otterbein, Attica-Williamsport, and Fowler heard an address by Purdue President Dr. Martin C. Jiscke.   It was the first time the meeting had been held on the Purdue campus and the first time a Purdue President had addressed the annual meeting of the combined four clubs.

It was very exciting to hear about the current and future plans of Purdue's  "Discovery Park".  President Jiscke detailed each program and what they could mean for the future of Purdue and for our economic region of Indiana.  Please, please read....>>More
