Emily update February 12, 2009

Hello Suzann, Well my time here in Ghana is coming to a close and I am getting ready to head back to Australia.  Luckily Brisbane still seems to be doing ok, but that is devastating what is happening in Victoria.

My second semester went well, I finished with all sevens (highest mark) and am now preparing for my last semester, which will just be a thesis project.  After I finished my last semester I traveled to Fiji with some of the other fellows to visit Peter Emberson who was a peace fellow from Fiji in the class ahead of us. It was a wonderful trip. I have attached a picture that we took in front of a Rotary project outside of a place called Pacific Harbour.

I have only five days left in Ghana and am starting to feel quite sad to leave. I have had a wonderful experience. My internship has been with IOM (International Organisation for Migration) and as it is the leading international organisation working with all things migration, I have had access to a lot of very interesting projects and met some amazing people. I hope to continue working in the area of migration, and I know that this internship will have helped with this goal. I will also be using information from my work here for my thesis, as it will be related to the child trafficking work I have done.  My internship has been with the technical cooperation department of IOM Accra. Here I have worked with the labour migration programme in policy and programme development, the assisted voluntary return programme for Irregular migrants returning from Europe and Libya, and the Counter Child Trafficking Programme. I sent a picassa invite where I have some pictures with captions that give a better taste of my work and some of the short trips that I have been able to do on the weekends.  It has been an amazing experience.

I leave Ghana on the 16th and will stop over in Dubai for a week.  My sister is living in Sharjah outside of Dubai and I look forward to visiting her. I will then continue to Brisbane and arrive on the 24th.  I look forward to resuming my studies and will be graduating in June. I can't believe it has gone by this quickly.

I hope all is well, please send my warm wishes to the entire Attica Williamsport Club.

Cheers, Emily

The Poston's with Emily

Hi everyone,

For those who are interested, I was indeed able to spend some time with Emily during my recent trip to Ghana.  We met at a food court in Accra that serves western food.

Attached is a photo of myself, Emily, and my daughters Allison and Katie.   We spoke on a variety of subjects – much of it merely about Ghanaian culture, food, weather, etc.    My girls were most interested in hearing about Emily’s visit to Mole National Park in Northern Ghana to see elephants and other African wildlife!  The Poston family hopes to go there on one of our next visits to Ghana.

We were fascinated to hear a bit more about her rescue of children from forced labor situations.  Incredibly rewarding work!   Unfortunately, for every bit of time Emily spent in the field, she needed to spend 5 times as much time doing paperwork.

We talked some about her amazing travels around the globe and her return to Australia to finish her studies and Rotary scholarship commitments.   She will return to Indiana this Summer and will be able to tell us more about her adventures and her future plans.

It was a joy spending some time with her in Ghana!
Steve
